Saarland – the South Land of Germany
Saarland is located in the South of Germany near Saar River (find Saarland with Germany maps) which flows across the land. Actually Saarland is a quite small land which was re-unificated to Federal Republic of Germany in 1954. Before this date the land was controlled by the League of Nations and later by France. The Saarland capital is Saarbrucken town.
Although the land does not historically belong to Germany for centuries it remains the significant traces and remnants of the ancient times and modern industrial history at the same time.

The Kirkel village just at Montclair Castle ruins has well kept and animated the rituals and celebrations of the Round Table Knights. Several times a year Kirkel inhabitants dressed in real medieval costumes organize knights tournaments, songs and dance competitions. The most exciting thing is every visitor and spectator is welcome to take an active part in performance, feel a brave knight, a hospitable castellan or inn’s owner in his heart. For not – so- active visitors who are mostly fond of passive study and research there is a wonderful opportunity to discover Gallo-Roman settlement excavated near Tholey.
The ancient study can be enriched by the Baroque Saarbrucken Castle observation built in the land’s capital in the 17 th century.
Modern history and art are resented by the Saarland museums and art galleries.
The most impressive modern sight worth seeing is the UNESCO World Heritage of the Volklingen Ironworks complex located near Saarbrucken. The giant iron industry complex was closed in 1986 and later became the open-air museum of the Iron Industrial Era. The huge plant’s blast, furnace, water tower rooms keep the magnificent power of industrial era in Germany and now often serve as conference, meetings and displays areas.
