Bamberg in Bavaria – UNESCO World Heritage

Bamberg town in Bavaria is one of the most ancient towns in Germany. It originates from the Holy Roman Empire, was built on the seven hills like Rome and was favored by the German king Heinrich II.

The Bamberg town gained its UNESCO World Heritage status due to medieval architecture buildings started by the Emperor in 1002. Here you can learn the history of European architecture since the Romanesque birth through Baroque flourish to the later Gothic edifices. Probably UNESCO was willing to appreciate this town for preserving ancient architecture in the very form it was presented in the Middle Ages.

Many Bamberg tourists and visitors start their architecture course from the Bamberg churches founded by Heinrich II and preserved the most ancient architecture of the town. One of the oldest Romanesque edifices is the Imperial Cathedral – the large four-towered church which presents now the tombs of German kings and bishops and the numerous sculptures. Another Romanesque sight is St. Jacob church.

Baroques architecture is presented by St. Martin church, Old Town Hall – the handcrafted island of the Regnitz river, Concordia Palace and Maximiliansplatz constructed by Balthazar Neumann in 18 th century. The worshippers of sumptuous golden and colorful forms and bright frescos can never get tired of walking and taking photos!

Many Bamberg architectural masterpieces have been re-built and renewed during the centuries: from the medieval ages to the modern times of the World War II which damaged the town sights heavily. Most restored and re-constructed buildings remain later Gothic architecture. Among them are Town Hall Castle, St. Michael church, the Church of Our Lady preserved the Gothic style in its pure forms.
