Leipzig – the Biggest City of Saxony
Leipzig is one of the oldest cities in Germany situated just two hours to the South of Berlin. Although Leipzig is not the Saxony capital it is the largest city in Saxony land. Leipzig was officially credited as a town in 1165, however, the records about settlements at its place dated back 7 th century. The beauty of the city’s place was reflected in its name – Leipzig is translated as the ‘linden grove’. The city is worth a visit for three reasons:
- those who study and adore architecture would find an impressive examples of Renaissance Old City Hall and Baroque St. Nicholas’ and St. Thomas’ churches
- shopping fans and businesses would enjoy great fair trading
- the history explorers would admire the Leipzig cultural heritage marked by Bach, Wagner, Schiller and Goethe
The Old City Hall dated back to the 16 th century is now housing the City Museum with the exhibitions in the Leipzig old history, relics and arts. The Hall is associated with the Germany re-unification history as well. It was the very place where the Leipzig citizens manifestation in 1989 led to the Berlin Wall Fall.
The Baroque St. Thomas church gained its world-wide significance due to the Bach’s playing and burial place there. The church has a magnificent organ and the Bach’s compositions are played every day. It is remarkable that the church is open to the worshipers.
Leipzig is the symbol of international fair trading centering exhibitions and fairs for incredible number of goods including arts, movies, industries, sports, vehicles, constructions etc. Art fairs include the International Festival of the Cultural and Documentary Films held every October in Leipzig (see film festival reports and schedules)
While Leipzig city gave Bach the peace place it presented the Wagner’s birth day in 1813 and kept well the German outstanding composers’ works and heritage. Leipzig was the first German city opened conservatory and is now holds the famous Gewandhaus – Opera House which presents Mozart, Bach festivals annually.
At last but not least Leipzig city has been selected as one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup games starting on 9 June in Germany. Leipzig Zentralstadion is going to host football fans and spectators for FIFA World Cup 5 football meetings.
