Frankfurt, or like Germans used to call it – Frankfurt am Main, has merged both economical and political functions and played a significant role in the German history.
Although Frankfurt historical background counts mostly great economical growth its history begins with the important political events. The city deprived its name from the Franks tribe and became Eastern Franks capital and a real city after the Emperor Charlemagne resided Synod and imperial residence in the 8 th century. Actually Charlemagne took his residence in Frankfurt. After that the economical prosperity gave the city the reputation of one of the most important German center. Frankfurt became a free merchant center presented the world Rothschild and a banking system which brought the city world-wide significance.
Being rather free economical center and residing foreigners from all over the world Frankfurt has never been a religious city. It main church, Frankfurt Cathedral or St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, kept coronation of the German Emperors and did never held religious services. Now the cathedral represented the Gothic architecture historical heritage.
Another example of the Frankfurt’s anti-religious status is St. Paul’s church which has rather political significance than religious one. The 19 th century democratic and reformation movement chose this church as the seat of the Frankfurt Parliament.
Both churches are located in the Alt Stadt – the Old City which also comprises Romer - the City Hall with nine Gothic medieval buildings with merchant center background – and Goethe Haus with museum and library.
